Why Comprehensive Motorcycle Insurance is Worth the Investment

There is nothing better than hitting the roads around Willoughby, OH and feeling the wind in your hair. It is an exhilarating feeling that can’t be replicated in a car or other vehicle. However, with freedom comes a fair share of risks. Motorcycles are not the safest vehicles on the road, and accidents can result in serious injuries or even death. That’s why The Merhar Agency LLC recommends comprehensive motorcycle insurance.

Benefits of Comprehensive Motorcycle Insurance

Comprehensive motorcycle insurance covers damage or loss to your motorcycle resulting from accidents, theft, fire, vandalism, and natural disasters. This type of policy covers everything from collisions with other vehicles to hitting a pothole or deer on the road. Comprehensive coverage even extends to non-vehicle-related incidents, such as theft or damage caused by falling trees or hail.

Comprehensive motorcycle insurance is that it can potentially save you thousands of dollars in the event of an accident or theft. Without insurance, you would be liable for the cost of repairs or replacement of your motorcycle out of pocket.

Comprehensive motorcycle insurance also provides protection for other people on the road. In the unfortunate event of an accident, insurance coverage can help pay for injuries to others and damage to their vehicle or property and potentially save you from having to pay out of pocket for this damage.

How to Register a Motorcycle in Ohio

To legally operate a motorcycle in Ohio, it must be registered with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. If you are a new resident in Ohio, you’ll have thirty days after establishing residency to register your motorcycle concurrently with titling and registration. The registration process consists of several parts, with the first being to complete an E-Check emissions inspection if you live in an emissions-required county. Once done, you can head to your local deputy registrar license office with the following documents to process the registration:

  • Motorcycle Title
  • Lease Agreement
  • Proof of Motorcycle Insurance
  • $25 Payment for Registration and any other applicable fees and taxes.

If buying a motorcycle from a dealership, the dealer will complete the registration process for you and collect all applicable fees in the bike’s purchase price. The dealership must provide you with a temporary registration until your permanent plates arrive in the mail and a title within 30 days of the purchase date. If buying from a private seller, you must complete a title transfer and an emissions test.

Ohio law requires insurance on any motor vehicle – including motorcycles. You are required to show proof of insurance at traffic stops, accident scenes, and vehicle inspections with the following minimum insurance requirements:

  • $25,000 for injury/death of one person
  • $50,000 for injury/death of two or more people
  • $25,000 for property damage in an accident

Winter Care for Your Motorcycle

To make the most of the investment you have made into your motorcycle, it is important that you take the right winter care steps. At the Merhar Agency LLC, serving Willoughby, OH, we are all about helping our clients protect their investments with the right insurance policies and asset advice. Keep reading to learn more about winter care for your motorcycle.

Why Winter Care?

If you plan to put your bike up for the winter, it is very important that you take the proper winter care steps. Following these steps will ensure that your bike does not sustain any damage due to harsh winter temperatures. These few steps can be done either at a shop or in your own garage.

Fill Up and Stabilize

You will want to fill your gas tank and add a fuel stabilizer. Be sure to only use fresh gas and a fresh stabilizer.

Oil and Filter Change

Now is a good time to give your bike an oil and filter change. Putting the bike up with clean oil will keep any corrosion from forming due to dirty oil or debris in the oil.

Drain the Carborator

This is a smart step if a vehicle is going to be sitting for a long period of time, especially if low temperatures are expected.

Protect Mufflers

During the winter months, mice will try to make homes in any small safe places they can find. Mufflers are a perfect spot. You can protect your mufflers from critters by stuffing steel wool into a sandwich bag and then stuffing the bag into the muffler. Cover the muffler with brightly colored tape to remind yourself to remove the bags before cranking the bike up again.

Motorcycle Drivers Should Consider Ample Medical Coverage: Here’s Why

Motorcycles can offer a lot of fun and allow riders to zip through traffic. That said, motorcycles are a bit more dangerous to drive and ride compared to a car. If you get in a motorcycle accident, you could suffer some bad injuries. The proper gear, including helmets and riding suits and/or jackets, is necessary. Ample medical coverage is also needed.

Need help selecting motorcycle insurance? Contact the Merhar Agency LLC, which serves Willoughby, OH, and other areas too! For now, let’s take a look at why ample medical coverage is necessary when driving motorcycles.

Motorcycle Accidents Can Cause Major Injuries, But Ample Medical Coverage Can Cover the Bills

When you drive or ride in a car, you’re basically encased in a protective cage that’s often equipped with airbags and other safety features. It isn’t easy to provide comparable protection on a motorcycle.

If you suffer an accident, you may be thrown from your sports bike, cruiser, or cafe racer, causing serious injuries. Prevention is the best form of treatment, especially when it comes to accidents. That said, you may suffer an unavoidable motorcycle accident.

If you suffer injuries as a result of a vehicle or motorcycle accident, medical coverage will pay the bills. However, there are typically limits to how much is covered. Once limits are reached, you may be responsible for the medical bills out-of-pocket.

When selecting an insurance plan for your motorcycle, car, or other vehicles, you can sometimes select how much medical coverage is provided. Often, this coverage is called bodily injury liability or something similar. Besides paying medical bills, some bodily injury programs will also cover lost wages and other costs.

Since the risks of injury are so high should you be involved in an accident, it’s smart to carry high bodily injury liability coverage to cover potentially expensive medical bills and lost wages.
